Ninja Tune Podcast - Benny Wenda

In this episode of the Ninja Tune Podcast, Matt Black, Ninja Tune founder and 1/2 of Coldcut talks with Benny Wenda, the West Papuan independence leader. Coldcut — who are friends of the Wenda family and long term supporters of the Free West Papua campaign—invited Benny Wenda to contribute to the Keleketla! record that was released last year. The resulting track, ‘Papua Merdeka’, centres around a heartfelt political invocation led by Wenda. It’s a call for freedom for the nation of West Papua from Indonesia, from which Wenda fled in 2004 after being persecuted by the Indonesian military.

Ninja Tune Podcast - Marie Davidson

Marie Davidson is a self-confessed workaholic. Her fourth album ‘Working Class Woman’, released in October of last year, is perhaps her most self-reflective to date. A veteran of the global club music scene, her most recent album is some of her most introspective, cutting work to date, and she’s ready to poke fun at the industry she’s spent her career navigating. She sat down with Chal Ravens, journalist and host of Red Bull Radio’s ‘Top Flight’, before Marie’s performance at Field Day festival in London. Remember to rate the podcast wherever you get your audio on demand.

Ninja Tune Podcast - Louis Cole

What do Quincy Jones, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Flying Lotus have in common? They’re all fans of Louis Cole. He’s had the rare pleasure of performing in Quincy Jones’ living room, been invited on tour with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and signed to Fly Lo’s label Brainfeeder, which isn’t bad going for someone who’s first 2 albums were released through his Youtube channel. Our producer Jack sat down with Louis backstage before his show in London this month to talk about Louis’ latest album, ‘Time’, and his follow up EP of Live sessions recorded with his talented friends including Nate Wood and Ben Wendel from Kneebody, Jacob Mann, Sam Wilkes and Genevieve Artadi to name but a few. Don’t forget to give us a rating on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts.

Ninja Tune Podcast - Jayda G

Jayda G’s debut album “Significant Changes" has a quality to it that’s hard to place in one space and time. At times, it's studio 54 at its peak, whilst at others it's tackling some the biggest issues of the present day. We’re used to club tracks sampling snippets of old documentaries and classic films, whereas on "Significant Changes'’ you’ll find Jayda using Orca cries and quotes from climate scientists. Jayda G sat down with Adam Corner, journalist and Research Director at Climate Outreach to talk about the melding of her music career and conservationist work and her series of talks engaging a new generation of music fans with the science behind the headlines. The next instalment of Jayda’s JMG Talks is scheduled for 22nd May at Giant Steps in Hackney Wick, tickets available via the DICE app. Remember to rate and subscribe to the Ninja Tune podcast wherever you get it.

Ninja Tune Podcast - Help Refugees

This month’s edition of the Ninja Tune Podcast finds our producer Jack Smith in conversation with Annie Gavrilescu of the charity Help Refugees. Ninja Tune staff were recently volunteering in the town of Calais, Northern France, playing a small part in the inspirational work that a number of charities are doing there in aid of refugees. In this interview we try to get a better idea of the challenges charities are facing, and why their work is becoming increasingly vital even as the conditions of refugee populations fades from the headlines. The music in the podcast is provided by 'The Calais Sessions’, an album recorded in a makeshift studio in the so-called ‘Jungle’, a former migrant and refugee camp that once stood on the outskirts of the town. You can find the album by searching 'The Calais Sessions' in Bandcamp, with all proceeds going to Citizens UK. The opening track is a recent recording of Ahforom, an Eritrean migrant living in the woods around Calais who had made his own Krar (a traditional Eritrean instrument) out of scrap materials. Find out how to donate or get involved at HelpRefugees.org.

Ninja Tune Podcast - Nabihah Iqbal

This month's edition of the Ninja Tune Podcast finds Nabihah Iqbal in conversation with Kieran Yates, a music and politics journalist and co-author of 2011’s ’Generation Vexed’. Coming off the back of a panel discussion at a recent screening of Omar Majeed’s ‘Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam’, the pair discuss communicating themes of resistance in their work during an age of worldwide political upheaval, and how simply expressing your identity can be an act of defiance in the current climate.
Ninja Tune Podcast - Discwoman

Underrepresentation of women in music is nothing new. Female:Pressure released a report in 2013 that revealed that the average female representation at major music festivals was a dismal  8.4 per cent. However, some booking agencies and collectives are spearheading an effort to rebalance line-ups across the world. This episode of the Ninja Tune podcast finds Emma Burgess-Olson AKA Discwoman & Technicolour Record's UMFANG in conversation with Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson, co-founder of Discwoman, a booking agency that exclusively represents cis women, trans women, and genderqueer artists. Together with their roster, their agency is helping to increase inclusivity in dance music whilst putting on exciting & diverse club nights that have seen their profile grow exponentially across the industry. We caught up with them before their September show at Corsica Studios, London.

For this edition of the Ninja Tune podcast, and the first of two parts, we have a very special guest in Ed O'Brien of Radiohead interviewing his good friend Dave Okumu of The Invisible. With Radiohead recently releasing "A Moon Shaped Pool" album and The Invisible releasing their own album in "Patience" the two met up at Roundhouse studios with regular producer DK to talk about their respective creative processes. In the words of Dave Okumu "I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon chewing the fat with Ed O'brien. Ed is someone who has had a powerful influence over me both through his role in one of my best loved bands but also as a friend. It's difficult to be in the presence of someone so warm, open and generous without wanting to explore a broad range of topics. I'm sure if someone hadn't hit stop, we would still be in the bowels of the roundhouse chatting up a storm right now!”

Ninja Tune Podcast - Coldcut + DK

For our final podcast of 2015 we revisit the Coldcut and DK 'Essential Mix’, broadcast earlier this year on BBC Radio1 as part of Ninja Tune’s 25th Anniversary celebrations. Matt Black said of the mix "We wanted to represent as many of the current Ninja Tune roster as possible and also throw a couple of classics from the archives into the mix, in addition to some influential and inspirational tracks". We start with the brand new single from Roots Manuva, plus music from Ninja Tune artists Romare, Beat Spacek, Bonobo, Machinedrum, an unreleased track from Illum Sphere and 'Glassbeadgames' by Martyn and Four Tet, with classic tracks from The Bug, Squarepusher remix for DJ Food, DJ Vadim and cLOUDDEAD remixed by Boards of Canada. Meanwhile Dream Continuum grab a cheeky sample of Coldcut's People Hold On and we hear the Eddie Kendricks track that lyrically inspired said tune. All this plus New Yorks finest Arthur Russell, Konk, jeru and OC, footwork from DJ Spinn & Rashad featuring Danny Brown, Flying Lotus and spiritual jazz from The Prime Element.
